LOL. Death threats for climate researchers and peace prizes for Noam Chomsky.

I suspect there are plenty of non-celebrity diplomats around the world who are more deserving. But the hard work of negotiating peace can be like a life-or-death version of contract law, a kind of moral accountancy, and the pencil-pushers of peace probably seem kinda boring and square to the average person compared to the firebrands of fear.

@Charleston Chew: No doubt there are many little known folk who do all kinds of good things, but the famous do tend to get more attention. They hardly have to deserve it, consider Sarah Palin. Chomsky has made 10,000 speeches attacking one war or another, so he certainly counts as an "anti-war" person of note. I rather imagine that the Sydney Peace folk sited him partially to express disapproval of American militarism. A reasonable position, IMHO.

Back to the article: With respect to his comparison of the crimes of Bush and bin Laden, Chomsky meant that Bush's crimes did more damage. No doubt they did. A moral comparison of the two men might give a different judgement. The US President is much more powerful than any mountain-dwelling fanatic, so he could do more damage without being as nasty a person. After all, bin Laden killed about as many people as he could, and clearly Bush did not. But Chomsky is interested in political effects, not individual psychology, so his judgements are on that basis.

Chomsky's honestly nothing but a hypocrite. He'll hype on and on about evil American imperialism but seldom a word about far left regimes. I will never respect him knowing that he shrugged criticisms of the Khmer Rouge off. It's one thing to be a pacifist and advocate for real peace, it's another to be an apologist and that's what Chomsky is. I've never been a fan.

In my mind, saying you don't like war and actually doing something to stop it are two different things. I've said I don't like war either, so where's my prize? What has Chomsky done to create a peaceful resolution to a conflict? I put more value in diplomacy like negotiating peace agreements such as The General Framework Agreement for Peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Belfast Agreement (pdf).
